How to Design a Beautiful Bedroom

A bedroom should be a private retreat, a haven that reflects your particular tastes in colors, moods, and collections. Learn the most important things to keep in mind when decorating your bedroom.

Select Subtle Colors

Choose peaceful shades and a restful palette of monochrome tones instead of bright primary colors. Color theory says that mild blue, lavender, or green tones are relaxing and soothing. Rich jewel tones help to create a feeling of coziness and comfort. Toasted browns, rich pomegranate, and topaz are examples. In the bedroom, use muted versions of your favorite colors.” That could mean substituting mauve for eggplant or pumpkin for orange.

Do Not Ignore the Ceiling

The ceiling is a room’s fifth wall. Do you perceive a bland, blank surface when you lie in bed? Use a soft color or a modest pattern. Paint the ceiling a lighter shade of the same hue as the walls. This will visibly reduce the ceiling and give the space a more intimate and comfortable feel.

Other options include using a decorative paint treatment, stenciling or wallpapering the ceiling, adding architectural elements such as beams or moldings, or stenciling or wallpapering the ceiling. Silver-leafed bedroom ceilings, a canopy, or a tented bed with a hanging dressing can engulf you in sensuality and warmth while adding texture, pattern, and color to the ceiling for ultimate luxury. Color, pattern, and texture can be added to the “fifth wall” above you with a molded medallion and a chandelier of crystal or delicate shades.

Keep it simple in the bedroom

Regardless of the décor style you choose, a bedroom should look pleasant and simple, smart, and exquisite. Allow at least three feet between the bed and side walls or large pieces of furniture for ease of mobility, and at least two feet between the bed and low furniture such as tables and dressers. Consider how you can relocate the bed if you need to walk around it to get from the closet to the bathroom.

Only place what you need in your bedroom. A bed, one or two bedside tables, a dresser, and a chair are all required. Anything else is a waste of space. Place a chest of drawers in the closet if space allows.

The number of accessories should be maintained to a bare minimum. Choose a lovely piece of art, place some family photos on top, add flowers and candles, and then let it alone.

Select the Proper Furniture Sizes

Start with a floor plan and a measured drawing of the space when you’re ready to buy bedroom furniture. Furniture should complement the space in which it is placed, and this is especially true for bedroom furniture. For a tiny bedroom, avoid a hefty, huge bed and dresser. A tall headboard will help to visually bring the ceiling down to scale if it is high.

Choose furniture that fits your bedroom if it is vast. Place a chair and ottoman at the foot of the bed, or another piece of furniture. In a spacious room, furniture and accessories that are too small will look out of place.

Have a lot of storage space

Store things out of sight to add to the tranquility of a bedroom. The space will appear more spacious and tranquil.

Choose a large bedside table with drawers or doors to keep books, lotion, and reading glasses close at hand but hidden from view. Choose a skirted table or a small dresser with drawers for added storage.

Toss excess sheets, blankets, and pillows into a trunk or a storage bench at the foot of the bed.

Use a headboard with built-in shelves or sliding panels for easy access to books and accessories.

A custom-designed organization system can help you get the most out of your wardrobe. Put shallow boxes beneath the bed and cover them with a lovely bed skirt.

Include a nook

Give yourself a wonderful present by finding a peaceful location to read. With a comfortable chair and footstool at the end of your bed or in a corner, you may create a private reading or lounging area.

Build a window seat under the bedroom window if you have the space. Take in the scenery and the natural light.

Allow yourself to be pampered with Luxury Linens

Beautiful and expensive fabrics should be used to decorate your bedroom. Beautiful linens offer comfort to a bedroom like nothing else. Buy only sheets made of 100 percent cotton or linen with a thread count of 350 or more. Send your sheets to the dry cleaner for professional washing and pressing for linens that feel like they came from a 5-star hotel. It won’t cost you much, but it will give them a crisp smoothness.

With a soft mohair or cashmere throw on the arm of a reading chair, silk or textured wall coverings, silk curtains, or a silk bed canopy, or plush floor coverings, add more sensuous feeling textiles throughout the bedroom.

Windows Should Be Covered

A well-dressed window can serve to frame the window and the view while also adding color, pattern, texture, and tenderness to the room. Combine opaque roller blinds that can be pulled down to keep privacy at night and prevent morning light if you like soft sheer drapes that filter light.

Include opaque shades or drapery lining in all drapes to keep the sun out when you want to sleep late.

Include a variety of Lighting Choices

It’s a good idea to “layer” your lighting across a bedroom. Ambient lighting illuminates the entire space, while small lamps focus light for reading and other activities, and accent lighting washes the walls in a warm glow.

Use a bedside lamp with a moveable arm to direct reading light where you need it. Each light should have a dimmer control. Install a separate on/off switch for each light so you may be selective and just illuminate the area you want to light.
