The Panagbenga Festival, also known as the Baguio Flower Festival, is not just a festival; it’s an annual event celebrating traditions and continuous evolution in Baguio City. It’s one of the most unique must-see festivals in the Philippines, lauding the bountiful flower harvests in the beloved city.

Hosted by the Baguio Flower Festival Foundation Inc. (BFFFI) headed by Executive Committee Chairman Anthony de Leon and the Baguio City government, this beloved event turns Baguio City into a vibrant sea of colors as a thousand flowers bloom every February.

“Panagbenga” is a Kankaney term that translates to “season of blooming.” Following the 1990 Luzon earthquake that devastated Baguio City, the Baguio Flower Festival was created to showcase the resilience and strong spirit of the people of the city. It’s an apt name for the Baguio Flower Festival as it captures and mimics the rich tapestry of culture in the area.

During the pandemic, the Flower Festival was put on pause as was the rest of Baguio City life. Mauricio Domogan, however, together with the BFFFI Board and other partners, worked together to bring back Panagbenga in 2022. If anything, the Baguio Flower Festival is only coming back stronger and even bigger.

The Panagbenga Festival 2024 has the theme “Celebrating Traditions Embracing Innovation.” At the helm of this year’s Panagbenga, Mayor Benjamin Magalong sees the Flower Festival as a step toward embracing innovation and the future within Baguio City.

In the Panagbenga Festival 2024, you can expect extravagant floral floats with vibrant formations and designs, all adorned with flowers, of course! As we gear up for Panagbenga 2024, here are 7 tips on how to make the most of this month-long celebration, which runs throughout February:

Panagbenga is not just about flowers; it’s a celebration of Baguio’s unique identity and culture. Take the time to explore the city’s landmarks, visit Burnham Park, and engage with the diverse cultures that call Baguio City their home.

Baguio is a melting pot of beautiful cultures and peoples, including the Kankanaey, Ibaloi, Bontok, and Ifugao. Take this opportunity to learn about local traditions and stories.

3. Shop Local Fresh Produce

For 17 years since the first Baguio Flower Festival, tourists and visitors have enjoyed a market encounter. However, the set-up saw some challenges with ordinances. The city government refuses to be deterred, however.

In fact, Baguio launches a revamped and improved version of the encounter now known as the ‘Baguio Blooms: Landscape Exhibition and Exposition. Here, local artisans showcase their crafts in flower cultivation, arrangements, and souvenirs bringing unparalleled economic benefits to local businesses.

Supporting local entrepreneurs this way contributes to the festival’s success and helps sustain their livelihood after the February celebrations end.

4. Attend the Floral Float Parade

The Floral Float Parade is a grand display of creativity and artistry. Marvel at the intricate designs of the floats adorned with fresh flowers and vibrant decorations. Secure a good vantage point along the parade route to witness the beauty of Baguio’s famous flower floats.

You could also attend cultural exhibits, art shows, and community events that showcase the talent and creativity of Baguio’s residents.

7. Participate in Panagbenga’s Environmental Initiatives

Panagbenga goes beyond just being a feast for the senses; it also champions environmental sustainability. The Baguio Flower Festival is a great marker of how important it is for us to continue caring for the environment, not only in the city but throughout the Philippines.
