Arts and creativity are valued in Filipino society. From the literary arts to dramatic arts, visual arts, and all other allied arts, there is no shortage of display of the collective human imagination of Filipinos.

Having a few cities (Baguio, Cebu, and Iloilo) bearing the proud title of “UNESCO Creative City” in the country is a spectacular feat. However, the artistic excellence of the Filipino visual arts community is an integral part of community-building and camaraderie.

One of the ways the National Committee for Culture and the Arts aims to further popularize Filipino artistic creations is through National Arts Month. 2024 has loads of exciting activities in store.

As February unfolds, it sees the opening ceremony and kick-off events that mark the annual celebration of National Arts Month.

Officially recognized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), this month-long fête pays homage to the rich artistic tapestry woven into the fabric of Filipino society.

History of National Arts Month

The roots of National Arts Month reach quite far back into the past, reaching a pivotal moment in 1991 with the proclamation of Presidential Decree No. 683.

The decree designates February as the National Arts Month in the Philippines to celebrate Filipino Art. It recognizes the vital role of the arts in nation-building and promotes artistic endeavors as essential components of Filipino culture.

It aims to cultivate a sense of pride in the Filipino people regarding their rich cultural legacy.

National Arts Month has since evolved into an annual celebration, officially recognized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, emphasizing artistic inclusivity and fostering a deeper connection between the Filipino populace and their diverse cultural heritage.

The objective was and is clear – to recognize the significance of the arts in nation-building and to propel artistic endeavors as integral components of Filipino heritage.

Since then, National Arts Month has evolved into a dynamic celebration, embracing diverse forms of artistic expression, be that through pop music cultures, Filipino architecture model making, contemporary dance, or indie music groups.

Encouraging Artistic Inclusivity

National Arts Month is not merely a celebration for established national artists; it serves as a platform fostering artistic inclusivity.

The theme for the 2024 celebration, “Ani ng Sining, Bayang Malikhain” (translates to “The Art Calls for a Filipino Creative Nation”) underscores the collective human imagination that defines the Filipino artistic spirit.

This theme emphasizes the diversity of artistic expression, welcoming artists from all walks of life to contribute to the nation’s cultural wealth.

The celebration actively promotes the arts as a powerful means to address social, youth, and environmental themes and challenges.

Through a plethora of events and performances, National Arts Month aims to inspire conversations and reflections on these critical issues, fostering a deeper connection between art and social and environmental challenges.
