Things to Do in Legazpi City, Albay
Legazpi City is a thriving hub in the province of Albay, Bicol region, known as the gateway to the world-famous Mayon Volcano. This city offers a perfect blend of natural wonders and urban comforts, making it ideal for a family weekend getaway.
Often dubbed the “City of Fun and Adventure,” Legazpi lives up to its name with numerous activities and attractions for all ages. Below, we feature seven family-friendly destinations within Legazpi City that will surely give your family the perfect weekend reset.
Getting to Legazpi City from Manila
The fastest option to reaching the province is to simply book a flight from Manila to Legazpi’s airport, which operates regular flights and gets you there in about an hour.
If your family prefers a road trip to check and enjoy each town you will be passing by, several bus companies offer daily trips from Metro Manila down to Legazpi, a journey of roughly 10-12 hours by land.
Best Time to Visit: Weather and Festivals
Like much of the Philippines, Legazpi enjoys tropical weather. The dry season (November to May) is the ideal time for outdoor activities, as you’ll have plenty of sunshine for sightseeing and clear morning views of Mayon Volcano’s peak.
Within this period, March to May (summer) often brings festive energy as families on vacation flock to parks and viewpoints.
August is another exciting time due to the annual Ibalong Festival, a celebration based on Bicol’s epic legend. During Ibalong, the city comes alive with street dances, float parades, and cultural shows.

1. Mayon Volcano
The Iconic Perfect Cone of Albay
No trip to Legazpi is complete without admiring Mount Mayon, the city’s most famous landmark. Mayon Volcano is an active volcano renowned worldwide for its perfectly symmetrical cone shape, a sight that captivates both locals and visitors.
Rising 2,463 meters above sea level, Mayon looms majestically over Legazpi, visible from almost anywhere in the city on a clear day.
Mayon Volcano ATV Adventure
Beyond passive sightseeing, there are ways to get a closer (but still safe) encounter with Mayon. Mayon Volcano Natural Park on the volcano’s slopes offers viewing decks and educational info about Mayon’s geology and mythology. For adventurous families with older kids or teens, consider an ATV (all-terrain vehicle) tour at the foot of Mayon.
Trekking to Mayon’s crater is prohibited for safety, but guided ATV tours allow you to explore the volcano’s rugged lava trails and river crossings from a safe distance.
Several operators in Legazpi offer ATV tours that take you over ash fields and up to Mayon’s Black Lava Wall, a hardened lava front from past eruptions.
2. Ligñon Hill Nature Park
Panoramic Views and Outdoor Fun
For one of the best city panoramas, head to Ligñon Hill Nature Park, a 156-meter-high hill that’s one of Legazpi’s most well-known landmarks. Located just on the outskirts of the downtown, Ligñon Hill (pronounced lee-nyon) provides a 360-degree view of Mayon Volcano, Albay Gulf, and the entire Legazpi City sprawled below.
You can drive partway up the steep road and then walk the rest, or if you’re feeling energetic, hike up via the paved path or the Kapit Tuko Trail (“Lizard Grip” trail) for a short but steep 10-minute ascent that gives a taste of real mountain hiking.
At the top, you’re greeted with fresh breezes and an unobstructed view of Mayon’s cone that’s picture-perfect on a clear morning. Many locals suggest going up around 7 AM to catch Mayon before clouds roll in. Ligñon Hill Nature Park is also a great activity center that’s very family-friendly.
Kids will love the 320-meter-long zipline that lets you glide through the air with Mayon in the background.
World War II Japanese Tunnel
Hidden on the side of Ligñon Hill is a fascinating piece of history: a Japanese tunnel dating back to World War II. This L-shaped tunnel, about 40 meters long, was dug in 1941 during the Japanese occupation and was said to have once connected to the old Legazpi City Hall.
For a small fee, your family can put on hard hats and venture inside the tunnel, which has been safely reinforced and lit for tours.
As you crouch-walk through the cool, dim passage, you’ll see life-size statues of Japanese soldiers hidden in alcoves, depicting how they used the tunnel for sleeping quarters and a makeshift hospital during the war.
3. Albay Park and Wildlife
A Zoo and Picnic Park for Kids
If you’re travelling with animal-loving kids, the Albay Park and Wildlife is a must-visit. Nestled at the foot of Ligñon Hill in Barangay Bogtong, this 5-hectare park serves as Legazpi’s combination of zoo, botanical garden, and picnic grove.
The park is home to more than 300 animals across 75 species, so there’s plenty to see. The park even has a small museum that showcases an embalmed 16-foot Megamouth Shark (a deep-sea shark species rarely seen) and a two-headed baby carabao preserved in a jar – oddities that will both fascinate and maybe gross out your kids in equal measure! With its mix of animals, nature, and leisure, Albay Park and Wildlife offers family fun at a gentle pace.
It’s common to see local families here on weekends, scattered around on mats having a siesta or celebrating a child’s birthday under the trees.
4. Legazpi Boulevard
Scenic Seaside Promenade with Mayon Views
Legazpi City Boulevard is a coastal road that beautifully showcases the city’s seaside charm. This lengthy boulevard (about 4 kilometres end-to-end) runs parallel to the Albay Gulf, offering stunning views of Mayon Volcano and the ocean at nearly every turn.
Along the boulevard, you’ll find interesting stops like the Legazpi sign (large letters where everyone takes photos), a statuesque monument of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi (the city’s namesake Spanish conquistador), and the Albay Gulf Landing monument, which is a commemorative pylon marking where American forces landed in 1945 to liberate Albay.
5. Embarcadero de Legazpi
Waterfront Entertainment and Shopping Hub
Down by the harbor, adjacent to Kapuntukan Hill, lies the Embarcadero de Legazpi, a lively waterfront development that has become one of the city’s premier lifestyle destinations.
The Embarcadero is essentially a shopping and entertainment complex built on the city’s old port area, and it offers a bit of everything: dining, arcades, boutiques, and exciting activities.
What truly sets Embarcadero apart are the fun activities it offers right by the water. Here are some family-friendly things you can do at Embarcadero:
Zipline from the Lighthouse
Thrill-seekers can ride a zipline that starts from the top of the Embarcadero’s lighthouse tower, zipping you along with a bird’s-eye view of the sea and the city.
Go-Kart Racing
By the bayside, Embarcadero has a go-kart track where you can race each other with the ocean breeze in your face.
Jet Ski on Albay Gulf
For water lovers, jet skis are available for rent, letting you zoom over the waves just off the Embarcadero docks. Don’t worry, life vests and brief training are provided.
Segway Rides
In a unique twist, Embarcadero offers eco-friendly Segway rides. For about 15 minutes, you can glide around the boardwalk on a Segway, which is both futuristic and fun.
After you’ve had your fill of thrills, you can unwind at one of the several dining outlets in the complex. There are fast-food favorites and local restaurants where you can taste Bicolano dishes (one popular spot is known for sili ice cream, the famous spicy ice cream of Bicol!).
6. Kapuntukan Hill (Sleeping Lion Hill)
A Quick Hike for a Great View
Just beside the Embarcadero’s bustling complex rises a small hill that resembles a lion at rest – hence its nickname, Sleeping Lion Hill. Officially called Kapuntukan Hill, this spot offers a quiet contrast to the urban vibe next door.
It’s a short, family-friendly hike that rewards you with another beautiful panorama of Legazpi. The base of the hill is easily accessible from Legazpi Boulevard/Embarcadero area; you’ll find a trail that leads up through some shrubbery and rocks.
It’s not a very developed path (a bit of a rustic stairway in parts), but it’s a fairly easy climb of about 15-20 minutes to reach the top, suitable for active kids and adults. Just wear sturdy shoes as it can be slippery after rain.
Once atop Kapuntukan Hill, you’ll see why locals like coming here. You get a panoramic view of Legazpi’s port district, the Albay Gulf, and the city skyline, with Mayon Volcano dominating the background – a fantastic angle for photography.

7. St. Gregory the Great Cathedral (Albay Cathedral)
History and Faith in the Heart of the City
After all the natural scenery and fun, a visit to St. Gregory the Great Cathedral, commonly known as Legazpi Cathedral or Albay Cathedral, will add a touch of history and culture to your itinerary. Located in Albay City, this cathedral is the seat of the Diocese of Legazpi.
The cathedral’s grey-and-white facade, with its arched windows and belfry, is an interesting mix of Baroque and modern architectural influences. The church’s history stretches back to 1587 when a chapel was first established on this site by Spanish missionaries.
Outside is the historic Liberty Bell, a bronze bell installed by the Americans in 1945 to symbolise freedom after WWII. Across the street, within the city hall complex, you might find the Legazpi City Museum (if open, it’s a tiny museum showcasing city artefacts and old photographs).
Legazpi City: Your Family’s Next Adventure Awaits
The seven spots we’ve highlighted are popular for good reason: they encapsulate what Legazpi is about – adventure, beauty, and warm community vibes. Beyond these, there are many other places and activities (from black sand beaches a short drive away, to spicy food trips sampling Bicolano cuisine) that you can explore on your next visit.
